Inspiration for a Natural World-View
Podcasts
Loading up your MP3 player with these podcasts is a great way to stay connected to the growing community of freethinking individuals. There are so many podcasts out there right now on just about every topic, it’s hard to route through them and find something you’ll actually enjoy listening to. Here are some of my favorites:
Freethought Radio & Podcast
This podcast is hosted by Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. FFRF is the largest group of Atheists and Agnostics in the US. The focus of this group is protecting the 1st Amendment to keep religion out of government. But their radio show goes beyond just political topics. Weekly guests include famous authors and composers, and they are always on top of current events or making national news themselves. You can listen to this podcast on iTunes or through their website.
Skeptiod
I can’t get enough of this podcast. Hosted by Brian Dunning, Skeptoid is a “Critical Analysis of Pop Phenomena.. a weekly pro-science, anti-pseudoscience podcast.” Mr Dunning is a great host. Each show is relatively short and on a single topic such as alien abduction or fast food myths. This exciting program explores both sides of every story with a critical eye, and I am constantly surprised at how eye opening most of the shows are. More info can be found on the Skeptoid Website.
The Naked Scientists
Based out of the UK, this is a very entertaining science podcast with enthusiastic and funny hosts. The show is a bit long if you are short on time when you listen to podcasts, but they cover so many topics, often doing experiments on themselves, that you’ll never feel like it was time wasted. They also have a cool website that will help you unleash your inner naked scientist.
Star Talk
Whether your interested in astronomy or not, you will be after this Podcast. Hosted by astrophysicist Neil DeGrassee Tyson, Comedian Lynne Koplitz , and regular appearances by Bill Nye (the science guy), Star Talk is fun and funny; informative and entertaining. If you have watched a documentary on physics or astronomy in the past 10 years, you have probably seen Dr Tyson. This is a well produced program by Discover Magazine and the humor aspect of the show is geared towards adults, occasionally getting up to PG-13.
The Skeptics Guide to the Universe
This podcast consists of a panel of skeptics with different backgrounds. The show is well organized, funny, and always entertaining. It is focused on presenting “the latest news and topics from the world of the paranormal, fringe sciences, and controversial claims from a scientific point of view.” You can listen to The Skeptics Guide to the Universe by subscribing within iTunes or on their Website.
American Freethought
This is a fun podcast that discusses current events. From their website: “In addition to perennial concerns like reason vs. religion and separation of church and state, [American Freethought] will also cover topics that any thoughtful reader should find interesting: science, politics, philosophy, the arts, and social issues.” Based in Atlanta, GA, the hosts David Driscoll (who also hosts the Secular Nation Podcast) and John Snider are informative, humorous and occasionally serious when discussing current events and secular topics. They also have good guests such as Neil DeGrassee Tyson, Mr. Deity, and P.Z. Myers. The American Freethought podcasts has a companion blog which they use to post their show notes so you can see the videos or read the articles they discuss on the show.
